David Cummings is a Deputy Editor at ESPN THE MAGAZINE, a position he has held since August 2004. He is responsible for the Basketball, Boxing and the Lifestyle sections of the magazine. Prior to becoming Deputy Editor, David was the NBA Editor and NFL editor. He has been with ESPN since December 2000.
David started in journalism right out of college, his first job was at The Dispatch in Lexington NC where he covered the Atlantic Coast Conference and Davidson County High School sports. David left The Dispatch and moved to Jackson, MS in 1990 where he worked for the Clarion-Ledger covering Southwestern Athletic Conference football and basketball. In 1992 David took a job with the New York Times, as part of the companies writing program for young journalists. He left the Times ini 1993, taking the job as beat writer for St. John’s basketball at the New York Daily News. While at the Daily News, David also started a sports section for The Source, a monthly Hip-Hop magazine. He held both positions for four years before moving to Miami in 1997 to work for The Herald, where he covered the University of Miami and the Miami Heat.
In his career, David has covered numerous NBA All-Star Games, NBA Finals, World Series, Super Bowls and NCAA Final Fours and many championship fights. Currently, David is on the board of the Montclair Neighborhood Development Corporation, a non-profit organization in his hometown of Montclair (NJ). He is also vice president of print for the National Association of Black Journalists Sports Task Force.
David received a B.A in Communications in l989 from Morehouse College in Atlanta, Georgia. He is married to Kimberly, and they have three children, David Jr., Elizabeth and Katherine.
